The Little Drummer Boy

Dr. Jean's I Remember post suggesting kids host an interview with friends and family about their Christmas memories flashed me back to my formative years on the farm during this festive time. Since we were A.L.W.A.Y.S. working, and television time was so rare, my screen-time memories are incredibly lucid. One of our gifts at Christmastime each year was time off from milking cows for the one holiday show that we each wanted to watch.
I picked The Little Drummer Boy every time!

Jacob's band played this hauntingly beautiful version of the song at their concert Monday night and, again, I flashed back. When I close my eyes and listen to the music (which features an oboe trio by three amazingly talented girls), I can still see Aaron's sad face, the fire, his little lamb getting injured. I can feel his sorrow and loss. And ultimately I share his JOY at the stable scene beneath that star as his story resolves itself at the end. So today I'm wondering,
"What do you remember most vividly from your childhood about the holiday?" As you reflect, sit back, turn up the volume, and relive your memories as the Friendswood High School Wind Ensemble, under the direction of Gregory Dick, spreads some holiday cheer with
Carol of the Drum.

  1. Good Morning, Barbara:
My Heavens! How old are these kids?! They are SO talented!!!
You're right... very touching... but I'm still stuck on very impressive. WOWIE!

I'm not sure what show it was... Ed Sullivan? Maybe a Christmas special? I remember a duet with Bing Crosby and David Bowie singing Drummer Boy. It was so beautiful, it made me cry. I've seen it recently on YouTube, but that song always transports me right back in time!

And, for reasons completely unknown, I can remember getting a "kitchen set" made out of cardboard when I was about eight, that I had wanted for AGES! My parents said Santa had hidden it in the attic. I was ELATED. Not sure why that comes to mind, but I remember it SO clearly, I could run up the stairs and get it right now!

The mind is an amazing thing.
    Happy, Merry Everything!

  3. Hi Barbara!

I think my original comment got lost in cyberspace! (It preceded Bing and Bowie and helped that comment make sense!)
(What is with Blogger these days?!)

Anyway, it was filled with kudos and awe about the kids performing (SO incredible!) and a story of Santa bringing me a cardboard kitchen set when I was eight...

Sad my comment is now bits and bytes in the universe--but such is technology.

JOYS of the season sent your way!
    Happy Merry Everything!

  4. Kim, you have GOT to get out of that holiday-neutral school - you are WAY too JOYFUL for them. Thanks for the video link; just watched it. Epic!!

Our Wind Ensemble is comprised of 9th - 12th graders, mostly upper classmen, though. It's the top band of five bands at our HS. Jacob made the band as a sophomore and is now a junior. He plays trumpet. The oboes are a sophomore, a junior, and a senior.

Thanks for your kind words. We are blessed to live in a community where music is a priority and taken very seriously. Today most of these musicians are competing at Region Band competition to try to be part of an elite Area performance in January. Many of them will end up being all-state players at the concert in February.

  6. My favorite memory is lying under the Xmas tree listening to carols over and over while staring into those big old fashioned shiny ornaments. I was about five and liked to see how they changed my face -- you know -- a big nose. Ha ha.
