PPBF: Something Fishy

In honor of my friend Sally, at whose celebration of life service I found out just how much she loved to fish, today's PPBF is
a fishy tale, of sorts.

Title:  Something Fishy
Author:  Barry Louis Polisar
Illustrator: David Clark
Publisher: Rainbow Morning Music
Date: April 1, 2013
Suitable for: ages 7-9
Theme:  Fun fish facts
Brief Synopsis: Prepare to get hooked by this whimsical poetic look at an array of exotic and even endangered sea creatures.

Opening Page:

Why I like this book:  The illustrations instantly baited me and reeled me in to the unique and undersea world with which I was totally unfamiliar. I didn't really grow up fishing or care much about fish (except for the yummy fried lake perch that I enjoyed every Friday night growing up!), so this book was not only entertaining with its clever rhyme, but also educational with its
fun fishy facts

Resources: Use Something Fishy in a poetry unit or to compare and contrast on a double bubble graphic organizer with one of my other favorite fish books.

  1. Thanks for introducing me to another great volume of poetry. Kids can never have too much well-written verse!

    1. I agree, Joanne, that poetry is a MUST for kids. It's always been a fun challenge to me to put words together with rhythm and rhyme! Thanks for your kind words.

    1. Thank you, Shannon! The Pout Pout Fish is AdOrAbLe, for sure, and the sequel - The Pout Pout Fish in the Big Big Dark - is awesome, too!

  3. Lots of fish stories today -- must be summer:) Love your word play. Am always interested in a good poetry book. The illustrations look wonderful. You also listed the Pout-Pout books. Kohl's is featuring the books right now and selling them for $5 and a stuffed animal -- goes to charity.

    1. It's summertime, indeed. Thanks, Pat, for stopping by and helping out! I actually got my copy of the Pout Pout Fish sequel at Kohl's and totally forgot to mention it in the post. I couldn't believe it was only $5 for a hardcover copy.

    1. Yes, Catherine - thanks for scouting out those COOL fish activities for us! Your book looked good, too, but I'm going to have to do some extra work before I can pick up all of the titles on my impossibly-lengthy list.

  5. Barbara...not only did you review a great book and give activities...you also gave alternative books on fish...I love that. What a great resource for parents this summer with kids out of school and looking for something to do. :)
