Reimagining School

Today I'm excited to share that the eBook I've been working on with Dr. Jean and our teacher friends Laura and Toni will be completed and available for purchase by mid-July.

virtual school, online school, distance learning, online learning, digital learning, homeschool, homeschooling, remote learning
And while it's chunk full of good ideas with all early-elementary students, their teachers, and their parents in mind, we've set our target audience as educators who'll be meeting their students remotely when school opens back up in August for the 2020-2021 school year.

Dr. Jean previewed it on her Live; you can now order it at her site {here}.

It brought me great joy to work on this team reimagining what school might look like and students might need as the pandemic persists. What is your district's plan for this upcoming school year? Yesterday, the Clear Creek ISD administrative team shared this plan.

Dickinson ISD, where I mentor, unveiled their plan today and it looks quite similar. So much bold leadership, to take on this task of moving forward into the unknown while offering options that cover the safety and security of as many of the stakeholders as possible. It has left me at once in awe and thankful to not have to be in on these decisions. I continue to pray for the wisdom that's needed for these policy-makers as we take on something so new and nerve-racking.

Some questions we might ask of our teachers, our students, and their families when we reunite, whether in person or virtually, to facilitate our debrief and reconnection include:

What was the shelter-in-place experience like for you?
What do you wish you could have changed?
What kind things did you hear about or see?
When did you experience empathy?
Did you have any opportunities to show compassion?
What did you like about staying home?
What did you dislike about staying home?
What did you miss about school?
What didn't you miss about school?
What was the hardest part?
What was the easiest part?
What were you scared about?
What were you angry about?
How did you show courage?
What were your frustrated about?
What surprised you?
What made you sad?
What did you learn?
What do you not want to forget?
What are you hopeful for as we move on?
What do you imagine school being like?
What do you anticipate needing/wanting from school this year?

What else might you ask to open up the conversation?

Off to the pool now, to watch the breathtaking summer sun set.

Happy July.

    1. My pleasure; it's just a start to open up the conversation. I think we'll miss a big opportunity if we start back and hit the ground running without reflection and debrief.
