Most schools are now back in session either remotely or in person; how did you do this week? In case you need some debrief prompts, I've crafted these reflections.
What other things might you and your school family benefit from discussing?
Today I'm excited and grateful to share this title that came in the mail as we were evacuating from hurricane Laura two weeks back.
Introducing Trudy Ludwig's new powerhouse, The POWER of ONE.
As the title suggests, it only takes one.
One look.
One smile.
One kind act.
One person to notice.
One person to empathize.
One person to reach out.
The book opens with a dramatic, wordless, two-page spread, in which the reader sees a serious conflict between two friends on the left and a group of kids on the right, one of whom notices (and feels empathy for) the girl in need. Does she even realize the chain reaction she could create when she reaches out to comfort and care for her new friend?
It truly does only take one.
One person to plant that seed.
One person to tend to it.
One person to harvest it.
In the back of the book, a list of other books with a kindness theme along with links to organizations who work with intention to make this a kinder world in which to connect, love and grow.
One of those listed is Kids For Peace. Have you seen the extensive list of fifty new SEL mini-lesson ideas they've curated for the Great Kindness Challenge?
Trudy also recommends my friend Lisa's Ripple Kindness Project.
Embedded within the storyline, an apology and forgiveness; check out what Harriet Lerner tells Brené Brown about that on an episode of Unlocking Us {here}.
So much rich goodness woven in to this simple newcomer;
I enthusiastically recommend you save it a spot on your shelves.
Speaking of newcomers, our friend and the co-founder of CharacterStrong, Houston Kraft, has a book releasing at the end of this month.
Check out this post to see what Houston has to say about digging deeper in the revolutionary guide he calls Deep Kindness.
And speaking of CS, I had the pleasure of sitting on a panel and pondering the importance of embedding SEL into Professional Development for staff.
What one thing can you commit to today
that could change someone's weekend?
Because it only takes one.
Happy Friday, my friend.
