Now I'm A Bird: A Review

Happy Friday; how are you doing with your self-care these days?

Today I had the pleasure of presenting a virtual workshop in MO today to discuss SELf-care with my friends at Peine Ridge Elementary; so grateful to be invited back to support their wellbeing and mental wealth.

Earlier this week, I was a guest on the Primary Teachers' podcast discussing this very topic with my friend Teacher Toni and we put together a freebie resource to help you care for yourself by feeding your soul, so go there to grab your self-care boosters, then tune in {here} to listen in.

This week I also came across this fun new release;
have you seen Now I'm A Bird yet?

It tells the story of a Julianna, a girl who didn't want to be a bird, but to whom becoming a bird is happening. Through Julianna's brave voice, the reader learns about her "rare and beautiful condition" and the ups and downs that accompany growing in to her wings so that she can figure out how she can use them to best help her navigate her flight through life.

With every turn of the page, this book begs the question:
  What gives you wings to soar?

Check out the book's trailer here:

Some reflection questions that came to mind while enjoying Julianna's journey include:

What sets you apart and makes you unique?
How do you use your special abilities or talents
to help you move about in this world?
How do you work with intention to celebrate those awesome traits?
What do you do when you hit a speed bump or get stuck?
Who or what helps bring you back when you feel like
escaping or flying away?
How do you step in to someone else's story to see (and feel) life from
their perspective, their point of view?
How do you invite someone to step into yours, even when you fear that
they may not understand you, your feelings, or your experience?

Finally, after the read-aloud and discussion,
write a Now I'm A _______________ poem or essay.

What's it like to become that new creation?
What's working? What's a struggle?
How do you feel? What do you want? What do you need?
What do you miss about your former self?
What don't you miss about it?
Who's in your new flock?

Encourage your students to use their wildest imaginations;
for bonus points, they could draw or sculpt this new being.

Have fun imagining the possibilities of living from a new vantage point,
then come back to your world with a fresh, new resolve to
cherish what makes you who you are and
 "just be yourself."

And now, a reminder that self-care is an important practice.

What will you do to take care of yourself this weekend?
