Expectancy & Value

Today I find myself at once exhausted and energized after experiencing three days of passion and inspiration at our Technology Symposium, so here's our #futurenow15 in review.

Tuesday kicked off with a keynote by George Couros, an administrator and lead learner from Canada. We're cyberspace collaborators on Twitter, so the coolest thing was that he recognized me Jen and I headed to the front to welcome him before his talk. He grabbed Jen's phone and we took this group selfie:

His message? Let's stoke curiosity, not compliance.

George challenged us to remember why we became educators in the first place, to change the trajectory of a child's future. He encouraged us to remember that if we want to inspire meaningful change, we have to make a connection with their hearts before we can connect with their minds. And he emphasized that innovation is the big game changer in education.

He also fostered a growth mindset with the Be More Dog clip.

After his session, Jen and I presented a TweetChat workshop;

Jen and her daughter made these cool shirts for us!
After our Twitter orientation, we hosted a mock chat that you can find in the #futurenow15 feed if you're interested. The best part was the Scavenger Hunt we sent our Tweeps on to encourage them to use Twitter after they left our class. I Tweeted out some clues and the first one to reply with the correct answer won and got to go to that person's door to find and claim their gift card. Tweet!
Here's a sample clue:

Day 2 brought Erin Klein of Kleinspiration fame from Michigan to Friendswood to talk about learning spaces and writer's workshop.

She, too, talked about reaching our students before teaching them. Why we especially connected with Erin is that she's not just an expert, she's a practitioner, a second-grade teacher in the classroom, doing what we do. Priceless!

Secondary teachers got to experience Amy Mayer while we in Erin's keynote. I enjoy a Google Docs breakout with Amy later that day.

Today we were treated to Dr. Curtis Chandler. The thing that endeared me to him was that he was on stage playing piano as we entered the auditorium. I knew instantly that I'd connect with what he had to say.

His first point was to connect with each of our students.
Even the prickly ones. Especially the prickly ones.
Then he talked about Expectancy Value Theory that so very closely parallels what it says on our Character T: I Can. I Will.

I came straight home and made this slide.

It parallels this Effort Chart that a Twitter contact recently shared:

Then I ran some errands and took a nap.
Because I am all techered out for today.

How are you preparing for this year's superheroes?

Joy In The Journey

Such an exciting week that started with my book going to the printer.
Here's the press release; look for it to be available mid-June at the latest.

********************************************************

I'm also feeling positively joyful because we're going to College Station to bring Jacob home after completing his freshman year in the Chemical Engineering Honors Program at Texas A & M. He just thrived in Aggieland; we're so excited to have him back with us for the summer.

I'm also jazzed because of this gift from my intern, colleague, and friend Krystle that now hangs on my wall. Isn't it awesome? One star for each of our children, my pride and joy, who make the journey joyful every day. Coincidentally, Krystle will be adding two stars to make three when her twin boys come this summer!

Finally, I'm excited to share the transcript from last night when I branched out and played the role of guest expert on a #servechat about Creating A Climate of Kindness in our Schools. It was a blast and the hour just flew by! To make the most sense of it, read from the bottom up. A special thanks to Sheila for moderating and keeping us on task. You inspire me to be better.

Intelligence Minus Ambition

I saw this quote at school today and I'm not going out on a limb when I say that
a bird without wings isn't going very far.

I will have to give this quote some more thought, too,
because I'm not sure I know how to instill ambition.
Is it one of those caught not taught virtues?
Or maybe it's a little bit of both.

Speaking of ambitious, I'm stepping out of my comfort zone by helping lead an online discussion tonight, so don't forget to fly on over to Twitter at 7:30 CST for a #servechat to chirp about Creating A Climate of Kindness
in our schools.

Kindness #Servechat

Today, a calendar item that I'm excited about;
what are you doing Thursday night at 8:30 pm, EST?
Why not join us on Twitter for a #servechat!

Coordinated and moderated by Sheila from Pennies of Time, this month's #servechat targets the topic of creating a climate of kindness in school and I'm honored and humbled all at once to be her "guest expert." To be honest, I'm also a bit nervous because I truly feel like a digital foreigner when it comes to social media beyond blogging and Facebook.
We'd love to see hear about your climate-changing ideas!
Go ahead, mark your calendars and
tweet yourself to a riveting discussion.

Plugging In To Screen-Free Week

Happy Teacher Appreciation Week
and Screen-Free Week!

It sounds heavenly to live in a world
where we're simultaneously appreciating teachers
and pulling the plug on technology
to give our kids a break from the screen.
How will you celebrate this week?

We're dusting off a deck of cards and scheduling a card game every night. Hearts. Canasta. VC. Estimate. Spoons. Speed. Crazy Eights. Kings in the Corner.
It doesn't really matter what we're playing, but that we're playing.
Together as a family.
Around the table.
With no iTouch {unless you're talking "eye" contact and human "touch"}.

We'll probably also go picking wild dewberries. This is such a great opportunity to get outdoors, breathe in some fresh air, and reconnect as we search for
those sweet little treasures.

And how about being active rather than passive
and planning some acts of kindness?
This would be a great week to turn off the high res and resolve to help someone
soar just a little higher (without a high price tag!).
Try any or all of these suggestions:
*Share a piece of the pie that you made from those luscious berries.
*Call someone whom you haven't spoken with in a while.
*Make some greeting cards and take them to a local retirement facility.
*Decorate placemats and take them to a hospital or rehab center. *Surprise the teacher on car rider duty with a little box of something sweet.
*Put stamps on the envelopes of a package of note cards and give them away with the suggestion of writing a note of cheer mailing it off to someone they love.
*Deliver a McDonald's Caramel Frappe to someone at work.
*Send a Day Maker email to a neighbor or friend telling them how much you appreciate them.
*If you see a stray shopping car, return it to its corral.
*Be the reason someone smiles today.

The Wheel of Death

OK, so today's clip encapsulates my biggest frustration and fear with technology, that dreaded little rainbow spinner. Feel free to dance along!
